Elements & Modalities in Astrology Explained

The Four Elements

Element	Signs	Themes
Fire	Aries, Leo, Sagittarius	Action, passion, inspiration
Earth	Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn	Practicality, stability, the body
Air	Gemini, Libra, Aquarius	Ideas, communication, relationships
Water	Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces	Emotion, intuition, empathy

The Three Modalities

Modality	Signs	Style
Cardinal	Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn	Initiating, starting new things
Fixed	Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius	Stabilizing, persistent, loyal
Mutable	Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces	Adapting, flexible, transitional

Reading Your Balance

Our calculator counts your planets (Sun and Moon double, plus the ascendant) by element and modality. A dominant element colors your whole temperament; a missing one can show an area you consciously develop — or seek in others.

Element Compatibility

Fire and Air energize each other; Earth and Water nourish each other. Same-element pairs understand each other easily.

Too Much or Too Little of an Element

Element	Dominant (4+ planets)	Missing (0–1)
Fire	Energetic, bold, impatient	May struggle with motivation or confidence
Earth	Grounded, practical, possibly rigid	Finds routines, money or the body harder to manage
Air	Curious, social, can overthink	May find it hard to step back and reason objectively
Water	Intuitive, empathic, easily overwhelmed	Can find it hard to name or express feelings

Element Pairs

Fire and Air are both 'yang' (outgoing, active) elements; Earth and Water are 'yin' (receptive, inward). Opposite signs always pair a compatible element: Aries–Libra (Fire–Air), Taurus–Scorpio (Earth–Water), and so on, which is why oppositions feel magnetic as well as challenging.

Modalities in Daily Life

Cardinal-heavy charts start projects easily but may not finish them.
Fixed-heavy charts are reliable and determined, sometimes stubborn.
Mutable-heavy charts adapt quickly and juggle many things, but can scatter energy.
