1. Get Your Chart
Calculate your chart with our natal chart calculator. You'll see a wheel: the outer ring holds the twelve signs, the inner numbers are the houses, the glyphs are planets and the lines in the middle are aspects.
2. Find the Ascendant
The ascendant (ASC) sits on the left, at nine o'clock. It's your rising sign and the start of the 1st house; houses then run counterclockwise. The MC at the top is your Midheaven.
3. Read Your Big Three
Start with your Sun sign (identity), Moon sign (emotions) and Rising sign (outward style). These three account for much of how people experience you. Big Three guide.
4. Read the Personal Planets
Mercury (mind), Venus (love) and Mars (drive) are next. Read each as 'planet in sign': the planet is the what, the sign is the how. Every combination has its own page in placements.
5. Look at the Houses
Which houses hold planets? Those areas of life are emphasized. Several planets in one house or sign form a stellium — a major focus.
6. Study the Tightest Aspects
Aspects with small orbs are strongest. Soft aspects (trines, sextiles) show ease; hard aspects (squares, oppositions) show tension that drives growth. Aspects guide.
7. Synthesize
Look for repeated themes: the same message from different parts of the chart is the core story. Check your dominant element, your chart ruler and any chart patterns.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Reading every placement in isolation
- Treating hard aspects as 'bad'
- Ignoring the houses
- Forgetting that the whole chart matters more than any single placement

A Worked Example
Say your chart shows: Sun in Gemini in the 9th house, Moon in Virgo in the 12th, Libra rising, Venus in Cancer in the 10th, and the Sun square the Moon. Reading in order: a curious, communicative core (Gemini) drawn to travel, teaching or publishing (9th house); a private, analytical emotional life that needs quiet time alone (Virgo Moon, 12th house); a charming, diplomatic first impression (Libra rising); a nurturing approach to love and a caring public image (Venus in Cancer, 10th). The Sun–Moon square suggests a push-pull between restless curiosity and the need for order — the main tension to work with.
How Much Weight to Give Each Factor
- Sun, Moon, Ascendant and the chart ruler
- Planets on the angles and tight aspects (orb under 3°)
- Personal planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars
- Jupiter and Saturn
- Uranus, Neptune and Pluto by house and aspect (their signs are generational)
