Planetary Dignities Explained

Some signs let a planet express itself easily; others make it work harder. Dignities describe that relationship.

What Are Dignities?

Essential dignities are a traditional system for judging how comfortable a planet is in a sign. A planet in its own sign (domicile) or exaltation acts with strength and clarity; in detriment or fall it has to adapt. Our placement pages note the dignity for each planet–sign pair.

The Four Main Dignities

  • Domicile (rulership): the planet is at home and acts naturally — e.g., Mars in Aries.
  • Exaltation: the planet is an honored guest and its best qualities are emphasized — e.g., Sun in Aries.
  • Detriment: opposite its home sign; the planet works in an unfamiliar way — e.g., Venus in Scorpio.
  • Fall: opposite its exaltation; the planet must work harder to be understood — e.g., Moon in Scorpio.

Modern astrologers also give Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune.

Peregrine Planets

A planet with no dignity in its sign is called peregrine — 'wandering'. It takes its cues from aspects and from the planet ruling its sign. Most placements are peregrine, and that's perfectly normal.

Is Detriment Bad?

No. Planets in detriment or fall often produce the most interesting, self-aware people: they've had to learn consciously what comes easily to others. Many astrologers see them as sources of depth and originality rather than weakness.

Beyond the Big Four

Traditional astrology adds minor dignities — triplicity, terms (bounds) and face (decan) — and mutual reception, when two planets sit in each other's signs and 'help' each other. These refine a reading but aren't needed to start.
