What Retrograde Means
Retrograde motion is an optical effect: Earth overtakes (or is overtaken by) another planet, so it seems to move backward. Our calculator marks natal retrogrades with ℞.
How to Read Natal Retrogrades
- Mercury ℞ — reflective, independent thinkers who process before speaking.
- Venus ℞ — re-evaluating love and values; a personal sense of beauty.
- Mars ℞ — strategic, internalized drive; anger may turn inward.
- Jupiter–Pluto ℞ — very common; read as more personal, inner versions of the planet's themes.
Is a Retrograde Bad?
No. Roughly a quarter to a half of people have at least one personal-planet retrograde. It simply describes a more introspective expression.
How Often Planets Are Retrograde
| Planet | Retrograde about | Chance it's ℞ in a natal chart |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 3 times a year, 3 weeks each | About 19% |
| Venus | Every 18 months, about 6 weeks | About 7% |
| Mars | Every 2 years, about 2–2.5 months | About 10% |
| Jupiter | 4 months a year | About 30% |
| Saturn | 4.5 months a year | About 36% |
| Uranus, Neptune, Pluto | 5–6 months a year | About 40% |
The Sun and Moon are never retrograde.
Natal Retrograde by Planet in Depth
Mercury retrograde people often think in non-linear ways, revise their words carefully and excel at research, editing and reflection. Venus retrograde can delay romantic confidence but produces an original sense of style and very personal values. Mars retrograde people tend to plan before acting and may need to learn healthy ways to express anger.
With Jupiter retrograde, growth and faith are developed privately; with Saturn retrograde, people often impose discipline on themselves rather than accepting it from others.
Retrograde Planets and Progressions
Over a lifetime, the progressed chart can show a retrograde planet turning direct (or vice versa). Astrologers often see that as a turning point in how the planet's themes are expressed.
