Empty Houses in Astrology

With ten planets and twelve houses, everyone has empty houses. Here's what that means — and doesn't.

Empty Doesn't Mean Unimportant

An empty house simply isn't a major focus of your chart. Life still happens there — you just may not feel strongly driven in that area.

How to Read an Empty House

  1. Look at the sign on the cusp — it shows your approach.
  2. Find the planet that rules that sign — its sign and house tell the story.
  3. Consider transits — when planets pass through, the house activates.

Example

Say your 7th house (partnership) is empty and has Aquarius on the cusp. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus (modern) and Saturn (traditional). If Saturn sits in your 10th house, partnerships may be linked to work, structure or an older partner; if Uranus is in the 3rd, relationships thrive on intellectual friendship and freedom.

Empty 7th, 5th and 10th Houses

  • Empty 7th house — it doesn't mean no marriage. Read the cusp sign and its ruler.
  • Empty 5th house — creativity and children still feature; look at the 5th cusp ruler.
  • Empty 10th house — career matters, but the Midheaven sign and its ruler tell the story.

Transits Activate Empty Houses

As planets move through an empty house over the years, its themes come alive. Jupiter spends about a year in each house, Saturn about 2.5 years — those periods are often memorable for that life area.
