What Is a Natal Chart?

A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. Here's what's in it and why astrologers find it so revealing.

The Short Answer

A natal chart (or birth chart) is a circular map showing where the Sun, Moon and planets were — against the backdrop of the zodiac — at the exact time and place of your birth. Astrologers interpret it as a symbolic blueprint of personality, motivations and life themes.

The Four Building Blocks

  • Planets — what: different drives and parts of you (planets).
  • Signs — how: the style each planet expresses (signs).
  • Houses — where: the area of life involved (houses).
  • Aspects — the conversations between planets (aspects).

Natal Chart vs Horoscope

Daily horoscopes are written for Sun signs — one-twelfth of humanity at a time. A natal chart is personal: no one born at a different time or place has the same chart. See natal chart vs horoscope.

Your birth date, exact birth time and birth city. Then use our free natal chart calculator.

How a Natal Chart Is Calculated

Three pieces of data define your chart. The date places the Sun and slower planets in their signs. The time fixes the Moon's exact degree and, crucially, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon. The place — latitude and longitude — determines the local horizon and meridian, and therefore the Ascendant, Midheaven and houses.

Your local clock time is converted to Universal Time using historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules, then astronomers' formulas give each planet's position along the ecliptic. That's exactly what our calculator does in your browser.

A Quick Example

Someone with the Sun in Libra in the 10th house, Moon in Taurus and Scorpio rising might be known publicly for diplomacy and taste (Libra Sun, 10th house), need comfort and stability in private (Taurus Moon), and come across as intense and reserved at first (Scorpio rising). None of those pieces alone tells the whole story — the combination does.

What a Natal Chart Can't Do

A birth chart describes tendencies and themes, not fixed outcomes. It can't tell you your gender, profession or exact life events, and it is not a substitute for professional advice. Read our honest take: is astrology real?.
