What Is the Part of Fortune?

The Part of Fortune (Pars Fortunae, ⊗) is the best-known of the Arabic or Hellenistic 'lots'. It isn't a physical object but a calculated point that combines the three most personal factors in a chart: the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant. Traditional astrologers read it for body, health and material circumstances; modern astrologers often describe it as where you find natural flow and joy.

The Formula

ChartWhenFormula
Day chartSun above the horizon (houses 7–12)Ascendant + Moon − Sun
Night chartSun below the horizon (houses 1–6)Ascendant + Sun − Moon

In other words, the Part of Fortune is as far from the Ascendant as the Moon is from the Sun (in a day chart). That's why it needs an exact birth time: it moves with the Ascendant, about one degree every four minutes.

Reading the Sign and Ruler

The sign the Part of Fortune falls in describes how luck and ease show up; the planet ruling that sign shows how to access it. If that ruler is well placed, astrologers consider it a sign of supportive circumstances.
